Before you make your New Year’s resolutions, if you still do that sort of thing, I’d like you to think for a minute about the outrageous highs and subterranean lows of 2008. In January, how many of us would have predicted the election of Barack Obama? Or the failure of the home mortgage industry? The Detroit Lions 0-16 season?
(Okay, maybe we should have seen that one coming.)
My point is that 2009 will also be a year of possibilities, not only on a national level, but within our own lives. Some of us have lost everything. Others are in the process of recovery. And still others continue to succeed beyond their wildest dreams. The one thing we all share is an inability to predict the future – and the ability to create it. I’ve read that more millionaires (per capita) rose from the ashes of the Great Depression than at any other time in America’s history. I haven’t found a reliable citation for that statistic, but I do know this: We survived. We recovered. We thrived. Millionaires were created as investors bought stocks that had bottomed out and hung on long enough to reap the rewards as the market rose.
That’s what we have to do in Michigan. This is not a time to hide the checkbook, it is a time to look for affordable investment opportunities. This is not a time to withdraw, it is a time to reach out. This is not a time to quit, it is a time to start something new. And this is not a year for New Year’s resolutions.
This is a year for New Year’s revolutions.
Up next: A revolutionary approach to press releases. Here’s a hint: Don’t write them. Please.
